Sea moss for inflammation and joint pain

Does Sea Moss Help with Inflammation and Joint Pain?

Sea moss for inflammation and joint pain

For centuries, the Irish and Caribbean have used sea moss as a natural remedy to treat numerous health conditions. Following its recent boom in the U.S., it became one of the most sought-after superfoods, claimed to cure everything. Is that really true? Can sea moss cure everything? No.

Sea moss is not magic. Sadly, those who claim so often have malevolent marketing intentions to sell their products, whatever the consequences. At Organics Nature, we value the truth as much as our customers’ health.

Today, we're discussing a common source of misconceptions: the effects of sea moss on inflammation and joint pain.

Can sea moss help with inflammation and joint pain? Yes, and a lot! It haspotent anti-inflammatory properties and significantly reduces inflammation when used correctly. But can it cure rheumatoid arthritis? No, but it can help lower the pain, reduce the symptoms, and slow its progression. Now, let's understand how.

What is Sea Moss?

Scientifically known as Chondrus Crispus, sea moss is an edible seaweed naturally found along the rocky Atlantic coasts, mainly harvested in Ireland and the Caribbean (that’s why it’s also referred to as Irish, Jamaican, or Caribbean moss).

While sea moss has been part of traditional medicines in these regions for centuries, its potent health properties came to modern medicine's attention only recently.

Recent discoveries found that Chondrus crispus is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on earth. Depending on where it grows, it can contain up to 92 nutrients, including essential minerals and vitamins, such as iron, iodine, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and vitamin B complex, to name but a few.

This exceptional nutrient variety makes it particularly valuable for human health. It works as a complete, all-natural supplement that helps prevent and treat numerous chronic conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity, thyroid disorders, respiratory infections, low immunity, infertility, and even cancer.

How can Sea Moss Help with Inflammation?

Like with any food and natural supplement, sea moss’s health benefits ultimately come down to the nutrients it contains. To understand how sea moss can help with inflammation, it's essential first to understand what inflammation is precisely and what nutrients help reduce it.

What is inflammation?

According to the National Library of Medicine, “inflammation is the body’s immune system’s response to an irritant," such as a germ, bacteria, virus, fungi, a foreign object, or chemicals, for example.

The five cardinal signs of inflammation are heat, pain, redness, swelling, and loss of function. They’re the signs the body has activated its protective function to fight an injury, a virus, or anything it identifies as an "enemy."

While acute inflammation is a natural and healthy body response, immune system disorders can cause chronic inflammatory diseases where the body mistakenly fights against its own healthy cells. Common chronic inflammatory diseases include rheumatoid arthritis (joint inflammation), psoriasis (skin inflammation), and Crohn’s disease (bowel inflammation).

Food and inflammation

Diet is essential for reducing inflammation. As Harvard Health Publishing strikingly puts it, “Doctors are learning that one of the best ways to reduce inflammation lies not in the medicine cabinet, but in the refrigerator."

Certain foods like fried foods, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, or red meat cause inflammation in the body, whereas others like berries, nuts, wholegrain, oily fish, leafy vegetables, or seaweeds are known to be anti-inflammatory. The best anti-inflammatory foods are packed with antioxidants, flavonoids, minerals, and vitamins and contain little saturated fat.

In most cases, the very first step your doctor may recommend you take when suffering from acute or chronic inflammation is changing your diet. That’s where sea moss comes in!

Sea moss's anti-inflammatory properties

Sea moss is a potent anti-inflammatory food. It’s loaded with natural anti-inflammatory compounds like vitamins A, E, and C, zinc, fucoxanthin, chlorophyll, fucoidans, and omega-3 fatty acids[1].

While research on sea moss specifically still lacks, seaweeds with similar nutritional profiles, like Okamura[2], Sargassum Fulvellum[3], and brown seaweeds[4], have been extensively studied for their anti-inflammatory properties.

When taken orally within a consistent routine, sea moss significantly helps reduce chronic inflammation and pain affecting the joints, nerves, and other body parts.

It's excellent to reduce skin inflammation too! Sea moss gel can be applied topically. Not only is it a powerful anti-aging, collagen-boosting skincare product, but it's also very soothing and widely used to treat skin inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Does sea moss help with arthritis and joint pain?

The most common underlying cause of joint pain and arthritis is chronic inflammation. Sea moss is a potent anti-inflammatory ingredient that helps reduce joint pain and arthritis symptoms.

Our sea moss and collagen peptide powder formula also helps fortify the joints to reduce pain. Joint pain is often a sign of collagen deficiency. Collagen is the main building protein in the body. It adds elasticity to the connective tissues and cartilage, providing cushion and flexibility to the joints. When we lack collagen as we age, our cartilage gets damaged, and our joints struggle to function with everyday movements, causing pain and stiffness.

Most of the time, supplementing your body with collagen and increasing your intake of collagen-boosting foods like sea moss can prevent, reduce, or even reverse joint pain.

How to Take Sea Moss for Chronic Inflammation and Pain?

There are various ways to use sea moss for inflammation and pain, including orally and topically.

For oral use, we recommend one serving of sea moss daily, whether in capsules, gel, or powder. Sea moss may take a few days or weeks to start working and reducing inflammation. Like with any health supplement, it takes time for the nutrients to build up in the body. Therefore, make sure to follow a consistent daily routine.

If you suffer from skin inflammation, we recommend applying sea moss gel directly on the affected area, whether with a sea moss face mask or a gentle massage.
