Find Out How Much Sea Moss You Should Take Daily!

Last updated on October 12, 2022

How much sea moss daily?

Sea moss, also called Irish moss or Chondrus crispus, has recently become one of the most sought-after superfoods. The 92 minerals and nutrients found in this Atlantic alga make it the ultimate food supplement to boost overall health and treat a wide range of conditions.

Consuming sea moss is more about regularity than quantity. As with many supplements, a small amount brings lots of benefits, and excessive consumption could cause the opposite effect and become harmful.

So, how much sea moss should you take exactly? How to calculate the perfect daily dosage to benefit the most from it without putting your health at risk?

How Much Sea Moss Can You Take Daily?

Unfortunately, there's very little research available to identify the best amount of sea moss one should take daily.

Sea moss is not regulated, and unscrupulous companies find economic interest in encouraging consumers to take much more than needed. But it’s a very powerful natural ingredient. While as little as 1 gram per day can make wonders, 200 grams of sea moss could cause serious damage to your health.

Chondrus crispus comes in different forms, including raw, gel, powder, or capsule for example. The serving sizes and risk-free daily dosages depend on the type of products you’re using as well as on your size and weight.

In any case, we recommend starting with the lowest dosage and gradually increasing it until you reach the amount that works best for you.

How much dry sea moss is safe to take daily?

There are no official recommendations about how much sea moss to take daily. One study[1] found that 4 grams of dehydrated Irish moss per day do not pose any health risk even for children.

It is generally accepted that 4 to 8 grams of dehydrated sea moss per day is a safe dosage. That amounts to 2 to 4 tablespoons a day.

Be aware that how much sea moss is safe to take daily also depends on the variety and the quality of the product. Indeed, the nutrients and their concentration vary greatly depending on the environment in which the seaweed has grown. For example, fake pool-grown sea moss contains a lot fewer nutrients than the wildcrafted kind.

How much sea moss gel can you take daily?

Sea moss gel, also known as carrageenan gum, is a jelly-like substance obtained by soaking dried Irish moss in water and blending it. It’s the most efficient and convenient way to consume sea moss, as it’s easy to mix with foods and drinks.

At Organics Nature, we advise our customers to take 1 to 2 tablespoons of sour organic sea moss gel per day.

How many mg of sea moss powder can you take per day?

Sea moss powder is obtained from dehydrated sea moss. Unlike Irish Sea Moss Gel, it does not contain any water, so the nutrients are even more concentrated

You can safely consume anything from 500 mg to 3000 mg of sea moss powder per day.

How many sea moss capsules to take daily?

Capsules are another convenient way to consume sea moss. The advantage is that the pills are dosed with extreme precision, so you know the exact amount of sea moss you’re having. Not all sea moss capsules are made equal. Always read the instructions and serving sizes on the package before use.

Organics Nature’s Sea Moss Capsules are enriched with bladderwrack and burdock root. Each capsule contains 1000 mg of Organic Irish moss powder. We recommend taking 2 capsules per day. It amounts to 2000 mg of sea moss powder, which is a safe and efficient daily dosage for most people.

What Happens if You Take too Much Sea Moss?

As with any powerful ingredients, excessive consumption of Irish moss can be dangerous.

How much sea moss is too much?

Again, scientific research still lacks on the topic. The same study we’ve cited before found that 286 grams of Irish moss per day are too much for an adult, mostly because it would lead to dangerously high iodine intake.

Unfortunately, science leaves us here… We know that 8 grams of sea moss per day are safe while 286 grams could be harmful. What happens in between isn’t clear.

Excessive sea moss consumption

If used reasonably, sea moss has very few risks and side effects. Most problems people experience actually come from overconsumption. Health risks of taking too much seaweed mostly come from two compounds: iodine and heavy metals.

Iodine is an essential mineral for our body, especially for thyroid function. Sea moss is one of the foods known to have the highest iodine content. While it’s great for people suffering from iodine deficiency, consuming large amounts of sea moss daily could cause iodine poisoning in others.

Like any other seaweed, wildcrafted sea moss may absorb heavy metals found in polluted ocean waters. Heavy metals are not toxic in small amounts but may cause damage to human health if ingested in larger amounts.

Organics Nature’s Sea Moss is tested for heavy metals by a third-party lab. You can see our updated testing results here.

More About Sea Moss Dosage: FAQ

Sea moss is still relatively new for most Americans. Following its recent popularity, hundreds of bloggers and influencers claim to be experts. But very few actually know how to use it efficiently and safely. Here are a few more important questions our professional team conscientiously answers about taking sea moss.

How much is a serving of sea moss?

There's no official serving size for sea moss. As said above, sea moss products come in different forms like raw, gel, capsules, or powder. Common sea moss serving sizes are:

  • 4 to 8 grams of dehydrated raw sea moss
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of sea moss gel
  • 1 to 2 sea moss capsules
  • 1000-2000 mg of sea moss powder

Some consumers find smaller amounts to be effective, while others need to increase the dosage.

How often should you take sea moss?

How often you should take sea moss depends on the benefits you’re looking for. Sea moss is used for a wide range of purposes, including diabetes, heart disease, immunity, gut health, skin beauty, fertility, and more.

The benefits of Irish moss may take a few days or weeks to be noticed, so it’s usually recommended to take sea moss every day until you reach the desired effects.

Can you take sea moss twice a day?

Absolutely. As long as you do not exceed the total daily amount, you can take sea moss several times a day. Many users add one tablespoon of sea moss to their morning smoothies and have another one for dinner.

Sea moss may cause some bowel disturbances, especially for first-time users. In that case, you may prefer to take it only once a day and preferably in the evening.

When is the best time to take sea moss?

Sea moss can be consumed at any time of the day. There’s a popular belief claiming that you should take sea moss in the morning but it’s not necessarily true. This belief is based on the fact that nutrients are best absorbed on an empty stomach. That’s only true for water-soluble minerals like iron or folate though. Fat-soluble ones such as Vitamin A or K are actually best absorbed on a full stomach.

So, whether or not you should take sea moss in the morning or the evening depends on the effects you're seeking. For more information, read our related article about the best time to take sea moss.

Sea moss is a natural food and quite sensitive to storage conditions, as it can quickly go bad, especially when it’s hot. Storing it properly depends on the product you’re using: gel, powder, gummies, raw or capsules?

  • Hi Coree,

The benefits of sea moss gummies and gel packs are the same, but the concentration differs. Gummies are less concentrated than sea moss gel, so it really depends on your personal preferences and how much sea moss you want to take. You can absolutely take them together, as long as you stay within the recommended daily sea moss dose!

    Warm regards,
    Organics Nature

  • Does the gummies have more/ better benefits than the gel packs? Can they be taken together?

  • Dear Katee,
You´re right, our capsules each contain:
    - 1000 mg of organic sea moss powder
    - 300 mg of organic bladderwrack powder
    - 200 mg of organic burdock root extract

Pairing sea moss with other powerful natural ingredients that work in synergy can only increase the benefits for health and wellness. And we’ve found that sea moss, bladderwrack and burdock root is the ultime combination!
